Longsword Recommendations#
This will be sectioned out alphabetically by seller. It isn’t a list of every single longsword and seller, but rather a curated short list of longswords that someone at our club has handled and liked. Think of it as a starting point, and as you gain experience, you can try opening every link in the big seller’s list and see what strikes your fancy.
Aureus Swords | 🇵🇱#
This doesn’t really belong on a beginner’s guide, but it’s here because you’re eventually going to notice John’s longsword and wonder what it is. An Aureus is a premium longsword with a minimum 24 month wait according to their current production queue. An Aureus is a great second (or even third) longsword, ordered only after you’ve decided that you’re in it for the long haul.
Aureus swords are tournament legal.
Esker Forge | 🇨🇦#
The Esker Forge Standard is no longer available, though if you’re lucky you might find someone willing to sell you one second-hand. The Standard is a sword that cheats the laws of physics by using better physics. It is light and fast while offering the bind presence of a heavier sword. It is kinder both to you and your opponent. While there is no perfect sword, this may as well be the next best thing, especially for beginners.
The Standard is tournament legal, and considered light-weight according to the club’s definitions.
HF Armory | 🇺🇦#
The HF Armory feder is a solid economy sword. Inexpensive without being cheap, and no-frills so you don’t have to agonize over options. Sure, the Sigis of the world will catch eyes, but this sword wins tournaments too. You have your pick of the Classic or Light. By our club’s definition, the Classic is at the upper range of a medium-weight longsword, and the Light is at the upper range of a light-weight longsword.
Both are tournament legal.
Regenyei Armory | 🇭🇺#
Regenyei’s Standard Feder is the Honda Civic of longswords. It’s not an economy sword or a premium sword, just a solid, durable, dependable sword. Opt for the “medium” blade to get decent bind presence while keeping things tournament legal. At 1420g, the Standard is considered a medium-weight sword.
The Spiky Feder is a Regenyei Standard that allows you to choose non-standard customization, such as a spatulated tip and a bazillion different pommels.
Regenyei offers numerous other feders if you’re looking for something more specialized.
Sigi Forge | 🇸🇰#
It’s easy to lose time playing with Sigi’s Sword Builder. There are too many swords to detail here and half the fun is exploring all the different ones available. In general though: Sigi feders tend to all hover around 1580g prior to customization (a heavy-weight longsword by our definition, but only just barely), and their light feders between 1250-1400g (a light-weight longsword by our definition).
Most (but not all) of their feders have schilts. Schilts provide important finger protection so all other things being equal, you should opt for a blade that has one.
Sigi swords tend to be tournament legal, but your customizations will ultimately determine that.
